Bevel Back Cladding
A cladding profile with a tapered, overlapping face that casts a deep, traditional shadow line. Bevelback gives a facade warmth and depth while shedding water cleanly.
A traditional weatherboard with a deep shadow line
Sugi Bevel Back is a classic bevel-backed weatherboard — its tapered profile laps board-on-board to throw a deep, characterful shadow line across the facade. It’s a warm, traditional face that still sits comfortably on contemporary New Zealand architecture.
Part of our fully certified cladding system, it’s engineered for New Zealand conditions and easy to specify and install, with full technical drawings and installation guidance supplied. Finish it in natural oil or charred Yakisugi to suit the project.
At its heart is sustainable Japanese timber. For centuries, Japan has managed its forests with a patience few countries can match — selecting, growing and harvesting with the next generation in mind. The result is a renewable, responsibly sourced material with a depth of grain and character that only time can produce.

What is bevel-back weatherboard cladding?
A traditional horizontal weatherboard with a bevelled (tapered) back, so each board beds neatly to the wall while the face splays out — throwing a strong shadow line and shedding water over the board below.
How is bevel-back cladding installed?
Boards run horizontally, each lapping over the one below with the thick butt edge at the bottom; the bevelled back beds against the cavity battens. See the Bevel Back installation guide for fixing detail.
What is the effective cover and fixing?
Cover, board size and nail-fixing centres are set out in the Bevel Back Weatherboard specification and installation guide. Fixings should be pre-drilled and sized per the guide.
Does it need a drained cavity?
Yes — install over a drained and ventilated cavity in accordance with E2/AS1, as with all SUGi cladding.
What finish and maintenance does it need?
Pre-coat all faces, ends and cut edges with the specified oil or stain before fixing, then recoat periodically — see the Finishes & Colours guide. It can also be left to silver naturally.
