Exterior Cladding

Discover the beauty of Sugi in a trusted and certified cladding system. Designed specifically for New Zealand's climate, our cladding combines traditional Japanese craftsmanship with contemporary architectural design.

A certified cladding system you can trust. Simple to specify and efficient to install.

Sugi Exterior Cladding is a fully certified cladding system, engineered for New Zealand conditions and backed by the assurance architects and builders need. It pairs the quiet beauty of Japanese timber with the performance of a tested, specified system — a genuine point of difference for projects where both craft and compliance matter.

Designed to be easy to specify and efficient to install, the system takes the guesswork out of detailing and fixing. Choose from a considered range of profiles — from clean vertical shiplap to characterful bevelback — to suit any architectural language, each supplied with full technical drawings and installation guidance.

At its heart is sustainable Japanese timber. For centuries, Japan has managed its forests and timber sector with a patience few countries can match — selecting, growing and harvesting with the next generation in mind. The result is a renewable, responsibly sourced material with a depth of grain and character that only time can produce.

FAQs
What timber is SUGi exterior cladding made from?

Our cladding is milled from sustainably grown Japanese cedar (sugi) and cypress (hinoki) — species naturally suited to exterior use for their stability, light weight and inherent durability.

Does SUGi cladding need to be coated?

It is supplied for oiled or stained finishes. We recommend pre-coating all faces, ends and cut edges before fixing — see the Finishes & Colours guide and the relevant specification sheet.

How durable is the timber in New Zealand conditions?

SUGi timber meets NZBC B2 durability requirements, with independent testing by SCION supporting a service life of not less than 15 years in NZ environments when installed and maintained as specified.

Can I let the cladding weather naturally?

Yes — left uncoated it will silver off over time. For a stable colour, an oil or stain is recommended and will need periodic recoating.

What cladding profiles are available?

We offer vertical and horizontal shiplap, bevel-back weatherboard and charred (Yakisugi) options. See each profile’s specification sheet for cover, fixing and dimensions.

A Generational Approach to Forest Management

Nearly 70% of Japan is covered in forest — a testament to a culture that understands sustainability and places a high value on its natural resources.

Careful Cultivation

For centuries Japan has managed its forests with patience — selecting, growing and harvesting with the next generation in mind. The result is a renewable, responsibly sourced material with a depth of grain and character that only time can produce.
