Yakisugi Cladding
Yakisugi — traditional Japanese charred cedar. Flame-treating the surface gives Sugi exceptional durability and a deep, living finish, from soft brushed greys through to dramatic black.
Charred for character. Built to endure.
Yakisugi is the centuries-old Japanese craft of charring cedar to protect it. The flame-treated surface resists weather, rot and insects, and ages with grace — giving a facade a depth of colour and texture no coating can imitate.
Sugi Yakisugi Cladding pairs that traditional surface with a fully certified, contemporary cladding system — engineered for New Zealand conditions and easy to specify and install. Choose from brushed and oiled greys, rich browns or a dramatic Makkuro black, across our full range of cladding profiles.
At its heart is sustainable Japanese timber. For centuries, Japan has managed its forests with a patience few countries can match — selecting, growing and harvesting with the next generation in mind. The result is a renewable, responsibly sourced material with a depth of grain and character that only time can produce.

What is Yakisugi?
Yakisugi (shou sugi ban) is Japanese cedar whose surface is charred to enhance durability and create a deep, textured black finish.
Will the char rub off?
The charred surface is brushed and sealed with an oil such as IOKA Char Oil to stabilise it. Light initial settling is normal and is minimised by the finish.
How is it maintained?
Periodic re-oiling with the specified char oil keeps the colour rich and the surface protected — see the IOKA Char Oil specification sheet.
Is charred timber more durable?
Charring adds surface protection on top of cedar’s natural durability; the cladding still meets NZBC B2 durability when installed and maintained as specified.
What profiles can be charred?
Yakisugi is available across our cladding profiles — see the relevant specification sheet for cover and fixing.
