Horizontal Shiplap Cladding

A classic horizontal weatherboard line, reimagined in Japanese timber. Horizontal shiplap gives a facade a grounded, restful proportion with a clean, continuous shadow line.

The timeless weatherboard, in Japanese timber.

Sugi Horizontal Shiplap brings the familiar, grounded proportion of a weatherboard facade together with the quiet beauty and performance of Japanese timber. The interlocking shiplap join lays a clean, continuous shadow line across the wall and sheds water cleanly.

Part of our fully certified cladding system, it’s engineered for New Zealand conditions and straightforward to specify and install, supplied with full technical drawings and installation guidance. Choose a natural oil or charred Yakisugi finish to suit the architecture.

At its heart is sustainable Japanese timber. For centuries, Japan has managed its forests with a patience few countries can match — selecting, growing and harvesting with the next generation in mind. The result is a renewable, responsibly sourced material with a depth of grain and character that only time can produce.

FAQs
What is horizontal shiplap cladding?

A weatherboard with an overlapping rebate (shiplap) joint, installed horizontally so each board laps the one below to shed water while giving a clean, flush shadow line.

What is the effective cover and fixing?

Cover, board size and nail-fixing centres are set out in the Horizontal Shiplap specification and installation guide. Fixings should be pre-drilled and sized per the guide.

Which way does the rebate face?

The lowered shiplap rebate sits at the top so water sheds down the face rather than behind the board.

Does it need a drained cavity?

Yes — like all SUGi cladding it should be installed over a drained and ventilated cavity in accordance with E2/AS1. See the installation guide.

How do I maintain it?

Keep the surface clean and recoat with the specified oil or stain as required. Full guidance is in the installation and handling documents.
