A reduced palette of natural materials creates continuity between inside and outside in this stunning Wānaka house. The raw Japanese cedar wall panelling inside has been finished in Ioka natural oil, with charred Japanese cedar (yakisugi) panelling featuring extensively throughout bathrooms, stairwells, and ceilings. The exterior uses our yakisugi or charred Japanese cedar cladding, battens, and mouldings.

Bold gabled forms meet refined natural materials in this striking New Plymouth home. Designed by Imagine Architecture of Tauranga and built by Peter Barnes Construction, the dramatic roofline creates expansive interior volumes while commanding attention from the street. The exterior showcases our Japanese cedar cladding in a vertical shiplap weatherboard profile, finished in our Yakisugi option — a charred timber treatment that adds depth and character to the home’s architectural statement.

Te Awamutu – Yakisugi House
Japanese burnt cedar cladding in a vertical shiplap weatherboard profile defines the exterior of this Te Awamutu home by LAD Architectural. The yakisugi treatment creates a rich, charred finish that establishes the home’s contemporary aesthetic. Inside, the material language continues with a built-in Sugi headboard in the master suite, creating a tactile connection between interior and exterior spaces.
