True Yakisugi can only be made with sugi timber (Japanese Cedar) due to having the ideal qualities required for the charring process. No other timber compares for durability, strength or appearance.
Our Yakisugi cladding and weatherboard system is made from imported sustainably forested Japanese cedar and nothing else. It’s all natural with no chemically treated timber, toxic glue or laminates required.
Amazingly durable and traditionally maintenance optional, our Yakisugi comes in 3 finishes and is available in modern vertical or horizontal shiplap for interior or exterior use.
Our Dento finish is Japanese cedar heat treated and charred then coated with natural oils.
The thick layer of soot gives the timber and color longevity, UV and weather protection, as well as fire resistance.
Our natural oil solidifies the carbon layer, minimizing blemishes and prolonging colour by preventing the soot from coming off.
Traditionally a maintenance optional finish, we recommend re-oiling every 10-20 years to prolong the layer of black carbon.
Our Makurro finish is Japanese cedar heat treated and charred then lightly brushed before being factory coated using natural oils to protect and prolong the natural colour of the timber.
The light brush leaves behind a smooth, lightly burned appearance that gains character with age. In Japan, the patina that develops over the years is valued for its beauty.
If you want to prolong the original colour of the timber, oil-coating every 5-10 years is recommended.
Available in a range of 10 natural oil colours.
Japanese cedar heat treated and charred then brushed twice removing most of the soot from the softwood and leaving carbon only on the fine hardwood grain.
Once the softwood is exposed it readily accepts our natural colour oils before we do a final factory coat to seal.
With every board finished by hand, the final result is a truly beautiful cladding with an enhanced timber grain set against a range of natural colours.
